Akwaeke Emezi has written a romance novel unlike anything I have ever read. The plot is captivating, inspiring, and genuinely unpredictable. It has earned the title of the Best Book of Summer 2022.

Feyi Adekola is a Nigerian-American artist who is opening up to relationships after 5 years of mourning her husband. After such a tragic loss, Feyi finds herself feeling guilty for continuing to live while he simply can not. As she continues to show up for herself and do the work of being present in the life she has, she unexpectedly and scandalously finds love in the most unexpected place & person. I enjoyed this book because from the first page my girl was getting it in, if you catch my drift. And I loved that for her. As Feyi navigates grief, survivors guilt, happiness, and yearning for what once was and what will be, she takes us through the harsh realities of life.
H.O.B (Highlights of the book) |
Deeply descriptive and detailed; you literally can imagine every page and sceneario |
Engaging, dramatic, and funny |
Steamy, LGBTQI+ friendly, and realistic |
Feyi’s character development was so beautiful to see. It reminded me that life journeys are complex, messy, thrilling, and inspiring all at the same time. Taking the risk to be brave, pull yourself up, honor yourself, and embrace every part of you will lead to finding someone who will pour into you as much as you have poured into yourself.
I enjoyed Akwaeke’s approach to this novel, which humbly reminded me that all relationships are multifaceted. I loved their choice of supporting characters, music, food (I was literally getting hungry while reading), life lessons, and jokes, which were funny and sounded a lot like how me and friends talk. Overall this book is a gem, an amazing tale of love and loss unlike any other. So go ahead, stop by your nearest book store and pick up this book. I promise you will not regret it.
Happy Reading Friends!
Love,
